Pool Lights - Which to Choose From?

!±8± Pool Lights - Which to Choose From?

If you have begun thinking about adding lighting to your swimming pool, the first thing you should do is to decide what you would like to include. After developing the design for your pool lighting, select proper solution from the wide array of options that exist on the market. In this article, I would like to help you choose the type of pool lighting that is right for you.

With the wide range of pool lighting fixtures to select from, you can choose what you would like to highlight, and how to do that for the greatest impact. For mood illumination, it is not likely that you will choose inground pool lights, but if you want the light to help you see as you are doing laps, mood and color-fixed illumination is probably not the way to go.

The next thing you will have to decide is the best way to accent your design with attention to your preferences. You will also have to make your selections from the three main types of choices: Halogen, Fiber optic and LED.

Light emitting diode is what the LED stands for, and this type of lighting uses small semiconductor devices that convert electrical energy into discrete light that can emit color. LED can be seen in some of the newer traffic lights that are going up in different places. Take a close look at these lights and you will see that they are comprised of many tiny bulbs that actually resemble Christmas tree lights.

LED utilizes this same kind of technology as it provides energy efficient lighting. It is also beautiful with its color changing lights as well as being practical.

You will find that LED pool lights take about 80% less energy as compared to other spa and pool lights. LED let you use either normal white light for greater visibility or various colors to make your pool look great. Comparing color changing LED pool lights to Fiber optics, the best thing that can be said here is that LED illumination looks just as good and saves on your energy bill.

Halogen and incandescent lights help to bring brilliance into all corners of a pool or spa. Halogen is often the lighting of choice by responsible homeowners because no harmful gases are emitted into the atmosphere. Going green does not have to mean giving up good illumination.

Fiber optic lights use cables to transmit light so that the energy source is far away from the pool and since only one source of light is needed that means energy savings as well as greater safety. Touching a Fiber optic is no problem since there is no heat generated at the bulb. Not only is there no longer any danger of burns from the bulb, you will also be able to enjoy the color changing effects as well. Some lighting options encompass the entire pool area, which is great when you have a lot of people wandering around.

The rest is up to you, now that you know about the many options available all you have to do now is decide which is right for you.

Ways To Hang Up LED Lights To Brighten Your Family's Holiday Tree

!±8± Ways To Hang Up LED Lights To Brighten Your Family's Holiday Tree

Make certain that before you get underway, to have all the supplies you require available. This will eliminate not having a supply that is required while you are the on the ladder. So we will start with the ladder, ensure you have a strong step ladder or small ladder available. You will need this while you are draping the upper branches, even with a short tree, being on a ladder makes stringing your LED lights much more convenient.

You will of course need your lights, an extension cord if the socket is not nearby or a step on off/on switch cord, makes lighting your tree hassle-free, as well as some patience.

Would you be amazed to find out that it is more advisable that you begin draping your Christmas Tree LED lights at the bottom? We had always begun at the top. Reason being: You can follow the electrical outlet with the chain of LED lights and not have too much or too little remaining from hanging from the top. Never considered it that way before. You will also be able to begin with the proper male/female connections, ever drape LED lights and end up with a pair of female ends?

When trimming your Christmas Tree, always begin with the lights. The lights are the primary object that should be put up before garland or baubles. Before you begin, make certain that the lights are functioning properly, nothing worse than hanging up the lights on the tree and half the strand is not lighting up.

As you hang up your LED lights apply a weaving motion one light beneath a branch and the next light above, beneath and above. Push the cord into the branches so the cord is out of sight.

Estimate your space as you weave your lights into the branches, alternate and spread out your rows so that there are no empty spots or clumps of lights together. Be especially careful not to bundle the lights together at the topmost part of the tree. The crown of the tree should be the special place for your topper.

If you think you need additional lights on your Christmas Tree, use extra strands and repeat the manner of weaving from the top of the tree to the bottom.

Not positive how many lights you require, a quick rule of thumb is to measure the height of your tree and multiply by 10. For instance, a six-foot tree would require about 60 feet... I know I go over the top on the quantity of lights on my Christmas tree but just can't help it.

Now that you are done stringing and are pleased with the LED lights on your Christmas Tree, it is time to adorn your tree with trinkets, garland and whatever pleases your imagination....

Bathroom Lighting Tips

!±8± Bathroom Lighting Tips

So, you've been putting up with the tacky light fixtures that were installed when you moved in. Or worse yet, maybe you still have the bulb and string hanging from your bathroom ceiling. But more and more people often, the bathroom is used as a sanctuary, a place to relax after a long day. Steam showers, Jacuzzis, and more spacious rooms are partly the reason. Whats ofter overlooked is the lighting, which can make all the difference when it comes to aesthetics and utility. The secret to good bathroom lighting is layering the light. Layering, refers to using different sources of light. In the bathroom, it involves using both general lighting and task lighting.

The first Layer

The fist layer, as mentioned, starts with ambient or general lighting. The goal is to provide a warm glow to the room by providing a comfortable level of brightness without any glare. The most common sources of general light for the bathroom is a flush or semi-flush ceiling fixture. It is also becoming more common to use a mini-chandeliers in the bathroom. Ambient lights need to be placed in the center of the bathroom so that the light is spread out evenly.

How much general light do I need for my bathroom?

The rule of thumb for the first layer of lighting in the bathroom is as follows. Multiply the length and width of the bathroom- lets say 10ft. by 10ft. Take that number and multiply it by a factor of 1.5. So in the example above, you would need 150 Watts of general light as your fist layer.

The Second Layer

The second layer is task lighting. Portable lamps, tracks, and recessed lights are usually the sources of task lighting. However, these sources don't work well at all in the bathroom. If you have a recessed light above the vanity mirror you've probably notices the shadow it casts on your face. It is not suitable at all.

Placement of bathroom sconces and bath-bars

Proper task lighting in your bathroom should surround you with light. The ideal source of task lighting would be two sconces on either side of the vanity and a bath-bar above the mirror. Sconces should be place about 6-8 inches above eye level or about 6 1/2 feet from the ground. They should also be separated by a distance of 28 inches or more. The bath-bar should be 30-32 inches in length, mounted above the mirror. FYI, many companies now offer "beauty wraps." These fixtures wrap around your mirror, providing you with sufficient light.

How do I determine the amount of task lighting in my bathroom?

Calculating the amount of task lighting is similar to the example given above. The only difference is you multiple by a factor of 2.5. In the example given above, that would amount to 250 Watts of light.

Energy-Saving Light Bulbs - Why LED Lighting Is Taking Over From CFL Light Bulbs

!±8± Energy-Saving Light Bulbs - Why LED Lighting Is Taking Over From CFL Light Bulbs

If you have been working on making your home energy-efficient, you have probably replaced most of your old incandescent light bulbs with energy-saving light bulbs. Until recently this was considered a big step forward. Those curly CFL (Compact fluorescent) bulbs sprout from lampshades all over the home and we think we are doing our bit for the environment. But now that LED lighting has become so much more versatile, it is replacing the CFL bulbs and showing them up as not quite as green as we had thought.

The danger of the CFL energy-saving light bulbs has been much talked of recently. They contain mercury which is very poisonous. Because they are fragile, breakages happen easily. A lamp just has to be toppled over, knocked by a cat or a child, and the bulb breaks, exposing the family to this toxic substance, as well as to shards of broken glass. Disposing of the used light bulbs is also problematic and if they are not properly recycled can be extremely harmful to the environment.

Although CFL bulbs are considerably more energy-efficient than the old incandescent bulbs, LED bulbs out-class them both in energy-efficiency and life-span. LED lights are 30-50% more efficient than CFLs and their lifespan is five times longer - that is 50,000 hours as opposed to less than 10,000 hours of the CFLs (and, let's face it, many CFLs have met with an accident long before they have achieved their optimum lifespan).

CFLs, despite being promoted as a green alternative to incandescent bulbs, are not actually that good for you. They emit harmful UV radiation and can add to electromagnetic pollution within the home, causing sensitive people a variety of health problems.

So why haven't LED s already taken over from them completely? The problem, as always, is cost. LEDs still cost more than CFLs to purchase initially. In the long-term, however, you save considerably, both in your reduced electricity bills and in the amount saved on replacing used bulbs. Because LEDs are solid and have no fragile components, they are very durable, so your investment in one LED light bulb could last you for more than ten years. The bulb will have more than paid for itself in two years, so after that for the next eight years you are saving money all the way. Finally there is a green energy-efficient lighting solution for eco-friendly homes.

LED Lights for Walkover or Step Lights

!±8± LED Lights for Walkover or Step Lights

LED lights are slowly replacing the majority of our lights in homes, businesses and public places as well for their numerous advantages over traditional forms of lighting. Walk-over or step lights are potential places where LEDs are a better solution compared to incandescent lights. These light fittings basically are available for many applications and solutions in households, in gardens, docks, or often in streets for illuminating sculptures or architectural sites.

Walkover lights are basically special fittings with usually regular light bulbs. Since step lights are often used outdoor, and obviously need to be durable enough to be able to carry a certain weight, they need to meet specific regulations and guidelines to ensure their safety and protection from these circumstances. Walkover lights meeting both regulations are suitable for installation in streets, gardens or decks for instance, but the majority of them can be used under water as well, like in a fountain.

The most significant characteristic these lights need to meet is a certain durability and have to be able to carry weight to a certain degree. The weight limit a light can carry determines where it can be applied. Not all lights are suitable for driveways for instance, but only for decks or steps, where people walk. For any use, it is best to check these features with the supplier. Submersible lights, or walkover lights which can be used under water have the same durability and there is a certain depth you can apply them.

For outdoor use, or use under water, all of these lights need to have an adequate IP rating, which indicates their rate of resistance to water and dust. From IP 65 to 68 lights are suitable for outdoor use, or for use under water. For indoor use on stairs for instance IP rating does not necessarily need to be that high, but IP55 is at least necessary for resistance to water while cleaning for instance.

Like mentioned before, most step lights include regular spots that can be found in households. These standard fitting lights are all available with LEDs replacements for their numerous advantages. As a matter of fact, many step lights come as a compact package including LEDs. Since walkover light fittings are usually difficult to access, and changing a light bulb or spot can be challenging, LED lights are perfect solutions with their extremely long lifespan. Most LEDs with average use last for 10 years, but décor lights, which are used for a couple of hours a day only can work for even 30 years. This definitely makes LED lights more suitable for such use than any other lighting solution.

Another reason why LED lights are especially recommended is their cool running compared to traditional and halogen spotlights. Step lights are most commonly made of stainless steel, which can get very hot if the light bulb included emits a lot of heat.

Low operating temperature and little maintenance both make LED lights ideal solutions for step lights in any applications. Their resistance to shock and vibration is a further advantage for outdoors, therefore their use in walkover lights is especially recommended.
